Midwinters 08, another miracle takes place

for the 23 year in a row, the Calema Midwinters were blessed with wind.

For a while it looked as though the longboard and Kona One Design fleets were the only classes to enjoy any racing. But after a single formula race run in winds close to the minimum on Friday, Sunday came in with definite Formula conditions for the 52 formula racers.

In the Pro division and overall winners, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel of Argentina won with a clear lead. Jesper Vestrestrom of Denmark was second and Antoine Albeau of France came in in Third. This is the first time in 4 years Antoine Albeau is defeated. Gonzalo was not to be denied this year, especially since last year his bid to win the Midwinters was thwarted due to an injury suffered in a collision in the first race of 07.

Since this event was the FW North American Championship, the North American Champion was Jimmy Diaz of the US Virgin Islands.

In the Kona division, the entire weekend was hard fought with the likes of Dave Stanger,Nevin Sayre and John Collins, the winners in that order.

The Sport fleet had a fun course set with the tight jibe marks adding challenge to the fleet.

On Saturday night, organizers Tinho and Susie Dornellas departed from the traditional banquet by holding it at kelly park, and having the Maui Sails No Bull contest. The prize was kept secret and was awarded to the longest cowboy rider that could stay on top of a raging mechanical bull.

many laughs later and bruised egos, and sore muscles, Calema Junior team ’s Daniel rusk was the winner by a comfortable margin. He hung in there with all his strenght the ride difficulty set on max, for 266 seconds!! so he earned a brand new 2008 Maui Sails TR4 11.0!!

needless to say he was very pleased, even if all the hair on his legs was rubbed off in the process.

This years Calema Midwinters had the largest amount of juniors ever. The level in formula, Sport, and Kona is rising quickly.

Calema hereby challenges all USA juniors to bring their best game to next year’s Midwinters. The classes in contention are Formula Juniors, Sport Juniors, and Kona Juniors.

It’s ALL OVER FOLKS

We just finished the awards ceremony. There was a lot of cheer and happiness among the competitors, family, friends and volunteers. There was plenty of wind today to get in all of the races and the Kona folks were even complaining that they had enough they had raced enough! All of the results will be posted by Tinho as well as photographs and videos of the successful event. I will report that in the top three slots on the Formula Pro were just as I said earlier: Gonzalo in first, Jesper in second and Antoine in third. Congratulations to the winner and we at Calema appreciate their journey to the U.S. to meet the local windsurfers as well as their fans. We wish them a safe trip home to their native countries. The current formula race was just called when the wind dipped. Although totals are not in it looks like Gonzalo is remaining in a steady first place with Jesper Vesterstrom in second and Antoine Albeau in third.

Midwinters Mid-afternoon Update

It has been blowing at 12.5. We have been racing back-to-back Formula A and other races for the last few hours. It has been impossible with starts and finishes over lapping to keep track of all of the scores to report at this moment as they are all being reported back to shore quickly. No one has been dismissed and everyone is prepared to get back on the water with a moments notice to race again. As soon as finals are in they will be here first.

Update for Sunday morning

Good morning to all of you windsurfers out there. If you aren’t at Kelly Park at the Calema Windsurfing Festival you are missing all of the fun. Last night those with real gutts rode the mechanical bull to see who could stay on for the longest amount of time. It was a whole lot of fun and the participants were happy to devour chicken, tacos and a wide array of food. This morning a skippers meeting was just held. Conditions are warm and sunny with an expected temp at about 77. Wind is out of the north west and reports have been between 13 and 15 for today with sailors waiting to get on the water shortly. Check back later for more!
